The built-in lenses are extremely large in relation to the slim outer diameter, so that a pleasant view is guaranteed even with very close eye distance with a binocular. You will not find an eyepiece with a comparable "space float effect". With binocular viewing, the edge of the field of view seemingly disappears and you feel like you are floating in space. This means that the moon and planets are not distorted when they move through the field of view, and the fields of view really correspond to the theoretically calculated value. Many manufacturers like to exaggerate the apparent field of view and use the edge distortion constructively in order to be able to state a large "apparent" field of view in advertising. You will see that the view really corresponds to what the focal length and field of view would lead you to expect.

Spacewalk feeling: We tested numerous types of eyepieces ourselves and paid attention to the wishes and impressions of other observers. We noticed that the requirements for wide-angle eyepieces cannot be reduced to the pure field of view. Immersion in the universe - the "spacewalk" feeling - does not occur equally with all eyepieces. Some 82° eyepieces have a restrictive effect, while with others - some with even a smaller field of view! - you have the feeling of being right among the stars. We found that two other factors play a role: the eye distance (the greatly enlarged eye lens of the Morpheus ® is absolutely necessary for this) and a pleasant viewing behaviour without the "kidney bean effect" (this results from a combination of large eye distance and an optical design that is tolerant of involuntary pupil movement). However, we also realized that this spacewalk effect no longer occurs at a field of view significantly below 74°, because the field of view limitation then becomes too noticeable. With this knowledge, we developed the Morpheus ® eyepiece with a 76° field of view, which meets all the necessary requirements to enable a real spacewalk feeling without any annoying image field edges. Also many zoom-eyepieces do not deliver the best possible image quality at high magnification because they were designed with focus on the price-tag so that image sharpness and field size is getting worse with increased magnification.

The recognition that the Hyperion Zoom Eyepiece enjoys is based on the fact that it was designed the other way around: the glass selection and most of all the principal optical design and consequently the lens polish quality – all were optimized for the highest magnification. And obviously, when closing in on an object you will want the field of view to increase and not to have it become seemingly smaller. Hence the Hyperion-Zoom shows the largest apparent field of view at highest magnification.

For many birders, observers of nature and astronomers alike, the Hyperion Zoom Eyepiece is their favourite eyepiece, it is also the only zoom-eyepiece that was designed from ground up to be used with bino-viewers.

What’s new in the model “Universal Zoom Mark IV”?

Even Bestsellers can be improved: The fourth generation of this eyepiece weighs 290 gram and is lighter by 80 grams than its predecessor – it now has 55 mm diameter to become useful in dual mode from 55 mm interpupillary distance, both features make it especially desirable for use with bino-viewers. The adjustable eyecup can be removed to expose the M43 video/photo thread and create the maximum “nose space” for using it on binocular viewers with the supplied winged rubber eyecups – for maximum concentration on the target. The click-stop action has been smoothed out to more easily access the magnification stops at 8/12/16/20 and 24mm (click-stops are mandatory to easily and precisely set both eyepieces to the same focal length for effortless binocular observation without eye-strain). The zooming-mechanism as well as the inner zooming rails for all lens groups have been modified to improve cold temperature operation and the parfocalty for each focal length has been finetuned.

Most important however – the Mark IV offers almost 4 mm more back focus. This is most beneficial for application with a multitude of spotting scopes. Two different Adapters for telescope and spotting scope adaptation are included with the eyepiece (Spotting-Scope Adapter „A“ and Telescope-Adapter „B“). Read more at “Telescope-sided Connections”).

The Mark IV comes with both the 2″ and 1¼” nosepieces mounted, each nosepiece having it´s own dust cap and both nosepieces are threaded to accept either 1¼” or 2″ eyepiece filters. Both nosepieces are free of the hated undercuts. Instead our proprietary Zero-Tilt Safety-Kerfs provide an added measure of security by reducing the tendency of an eyepiece to slip from an unlocked eyepiece clamp. An additional little feature is the Baader-yellow soft pouch with integrated belt strap – which fastens onto many tripod legs just as well, to serve as a bin for all dust caps that may go astray otherwise.

As usual with Baader eyepieces, the Mark IV offers an M43 photo/video thread on top of the eyepiece, to allow attachment of any desired DSLR or T-2 accessory for mounting a video-camera by means of the optional M43/T-2 adapter ring #2958080. Unchanged is the optical quality, 68° field of view at highest magnification, Phantom Group multicoatings, a large adjustable eyecup or alternatively two M43 rubber eyecups for bino viewing. By utilizing the supplied spotting-scope adapter ring “A”, the Hyperion Universal Zoom reaches almost four mm deeper into the eyepiece clamp of all those spotters, to safely reach infinity focus. When removing the 1¼” nosepiece, a 1 3/8″ thread inside the “A”-ring will make the Mark IV firmly thread onto all Celestron-Ultima spotters and it´s namesakes. It lets you continuously zoom with Click stops at 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24mm. The only difference to the fixed focal length is that the field also varies from 53 Degrees at 24mm focal length up to 68 degrees at 8mm. Carl Zeiss has chosen to develop and apply the very best coating ever made available to the most discriminating visual observer. The coatings feature a 0.2% loss over the exact spectral region where the night-adapted human eye is most sensitive. In fact, there is a kind of “emergency mode” in the brain so that even image information obtained with one eye can be distributed to both halves of the brain, but the brain has no way of correctly interpreting the “image errors” and above all the “nerve noise” that inevitably occurs during energy transport – just like with a CCD image!

Just as the user of a CCD camera or webcam superimposes several images in the computer, i.e. “stacks” images, the brain can also superimpose the different information from both eyes during binocular vision and in this way – each time in milliseconds – eliminate the imperfections that are not part of the real image.

So it is no wonder that after observing with one eye for a few minutes, you will have to take a rest that your brain demands because it is simply overloaded by the extremely concentrated viewing. In binocular vision, this problem does not exist! You can look as long as you want and remain relaxed. Even with severely impaired vision in one eye, the reduced tension results in an enormous gain in observation quality.

One often hears the criticism that using a binoviewer would split the light into two visual channels and that only 50% of the light intensity reaches each eye. This argument prevents many people from trying out for themselves what a revolutionary effect binocular vision has. But what is forgotten is that 50% of the light reaches each eye and that the energy from both eyes is “reunited in the brain” (more precisely, in the back of the head).

What you then see is by no means 50% darker than it is claimed. The real gain is only visible for someone who has tried it out for himself and has familiarized himself with this kind of seeing for a few minutes. Ultimately, the object doesn’t look darker, but becomes visible effortless, more detailed and – more beautiful.

Description

Baader’s long awaited MaxBright® II Binoviewer incorporates the knowledge that they have acquired from over thirty years of building astronomical binoviewers. It has a number of features that makes the MK II superior to cheaper models.

The housing with large 27mm prisms is made with Baader’s own custom die casting moulds, using Carl Zeiss production drawings. The non-slip leather finish provides extra grip when holding the binoviewer with heavy eyepieces in your hand.

All optical surfaces of the Maxbright® II feature a 7-layer multi-coating. The prism chairs (mounts) of the prisms are constructed like those of the Mark V Großfeld (Giant)-Binocular (#2456410). The clear aperture is 26 mm on the telescope side and 25. 5mm on the eyepiece side, and means even Baader’s 35mm Eudiascopic eyepieces are illuminated without vignetting. In comparison to models with smaller prisms you can see a much larger part of the sky at the same magnification – similar to our Mark V Großfeld (Giant)-Binocular (#2456410) .

On the eyepiece side, the newly designed, self-centring Clicklock® eyepiece clamps with diopter adjustment are immediately noticeable. Thanks to the ergonomic design, you can blindly distinguish between clamping and diopter compensation even in the dark. The inner parts are made of stainless steel for maximum stability. The high-quality eyepiece clamps are only the last part of the precisely collimated optical system, which is designed for highest magnifications. This is the only way to achieve the almost three-dimensional image and relaxed observation expected from a binoviewer.

On the telescope side, either a T-2 cap nut or a dovetail ring with original Zeiss micro bayonet are available – both connection options are included in the scope of delivery and allow a very compact adaptation to all common threads as well as our T-2 prisms and mirrors. Compared to fixed nosepieces, this effectively saves a lot of backfocus. The MaxBright® II is compatible with all Baader Glasspathcorrectors. According to optical calculations by Carl Zeiss, these correction lens systems shift the focus outwards so that you can still reach focus despite the approximately 11 cm back focus (the required inward travel of the focuser) of the binoviewer. They also compensate for the colour error that would otherwise be introduced through the prisms when using telescopes between f/4 and f/7.
