Explore the Moon, planets, star clusters and fainter deep-sky objects through an eyepiece. A manual Dobsonian gives you a Newtonian telescope on a straightforward up-and-down, left-and-right base.
Before you choose: Choose an aperture you can comfortably carry and store. You move the telescope by hand to follow objects across the sky.

Newtonian reflectors & astrographs

Classical Cassegrain telescopes
Consider a long-focus reflector for the Moon, planets and double stars, or for planetary imaging with a suitable camera. The range spans compact tubes and larger truss instruments.
Before you choose: Allow for a stable mount, thermal settling and suitable visual or camera adapters. A compact tube does not necessarily mean a lightweight complete setup.

Think beyond the optical tube.
01 · Make it manageable
Check actual dimensions and component weights, your route outside and storage space. More aperture is only useful when you can set up and use it comfortably.
02 · Build a complete system
An OTA is an optical tube assembly. Check the individual package for a mount, finder, eyepieces, diagonal and adapters; do not assume they are included.
03 · Match the camera and mount
For imaging, check target framing, focuser capacity, camera connections and corrector spacing. Include every accessory when assessing the mount load.
Questions before you choose
Is a Dobsonian a good first telescope?
A manageable manual Dobsonian is a useful starting point for someone who wants to observe through an eyepiece. Its simple movement lets you concentrate on learning the sky. Consider tube and base size as carefully as aperture, and expect to learn basic collimation.
Can I use a manual Dobsonian for astrophotography?
It is primarily a visual instrument. Short lunar exposures and some planetary capture are possible with a suitable setup, but manual tracking is limiting. For long-exposure deep-sky photography, plan a telescope on an appropriate tracking mount.
Does a fast Newtonian need a coma corrector?
A suitable corrector is commonly used for deep-sky photography to improve star shapes away from the centre. The choice depends on the telescope, focuser and sensor. Confirm the corrector’s compatibility and specified camera spacing before buying adapters.
What is the difference between an RC and a Classical Cassegrain?
Both fold a long optical path into a shorter tube, but they use different mirror figures. An RC is generally chosen for deep-sky imaging; a Classical Cassegrain is a natural option for lunar, planetary and double-star work. Neither label alone guarantees a flat camera field or compatibility with a particular accessory.
Should I choose the largest aperture I can afford?
Greater aperture can reveal fainter objects and finer detail when conditions allow. Balance that benefit against weight, cooling, mounting requirements and setup effort. For imaging, target framing and tracking performance can matter more than increasing aperture.
