Omegon AC 102/660 AZ-3 Refractor Telescope

The Omegon AC 102/660 AZ-3 is a compact, wide-field refractor designed for beginners who want a versatile telescope for the Moon, planets, brighter deep-sky objects and large areas of the night sky.

Its combination of a generous 102mm aperture, relatively short 660mm focal length and fast f/6.5 focal ratio gives it a noticeably wider field of view than a traditional long-focus beginner refractor.

Mounted on the easy-to-use AZ-3 alt-azimuth mount, it is particularly well suited to grab-and-go astronomy, comet observing and terrestrial viewing.

102mm Aperture with Wide-Field f/6.5 Optics

The telescope uses a 102mm achromatic refractor objective. The 102mm aperture provides considerably more light-gathering ability than smaller 60–80mm beginner refractors, making a wider variety of astronomical targets accessible.

With a focal length of only 660mm, the telescope operates at f/6.5. This relatively short focal length gives it a generous field of view that is especially useful for sweeping through rich star fields and observing larger celestial objects.

The supplied specifications give a resolving capacity of 1.13 arcseconds, limiting magnitude of 11.8, light-gathering capacity of 210 and maximum useful magnification of 200x.

Excellent for Large Deep-Sky Targets

The combination of 102mm aperture and 660mm focal length makes the Omegon 102/660 particularly enjoyable for exploring larger deep-sky objects.

Open star clusters such as the Pleiades benefit from the telescope's relatively wide field of view, while brighter extended nebulae and other deep-sky objects can also provide rewarding views from darker observing locations.

Rather than concentrating only on very high magnification, this telescope is designed to show a larger area of sky at once, giving a more expansive view of many celestial targets.

A Natural Telescope for Comet Observing

Comets can extend across a large area of sky, making a wider field of view particularly useful. The short 660mm focal length of the Omegon 102/660 makes it well suited to searching for and following brighter comets when they become visible.

Depending on the comet's brightness, observing conditions and chosen eyepiece, features such as the bright coma and portions of the tail may be visible.

Moon and Planetary Observation

Although the wide-field design is one of its key strengths, the 102mm aperture also gives the telescope useful performance on the Moon and brighter planets.

Lunar craters, mountain ranges and changing shadows can be explored at progressively higher magnifications. Jupiter can reveal its principal cloud belts and bright Galilean moons, while Saturn's ring system is also accessible when observing conditions are suitable.

The manufacturer specifies a maximum useful magnification of 200x, although the practical magnification on a particular night will depend on atmospheric seeing and the target being observed.

AZ-3 Alt-Azimuth Mount with Slow-Motion Controls

The telescope is supplied on an Omegon AZ-3 alt-azimuth mount. Unlike an equatorial mount, the AZ-3 does not require polar alignment before use, making it straightforward for a beginner to set up and operate.

The mount moves horizontally and vertically and can rotate through 360 degrees, allowing the telescope to be pointed anywhere around the observer.

Slow-motion controls on both axes provide finer adjustment after a target has been located. This is particularly useful at higher magnifications, where small movements of the telescope can otherwise move an object quickly across the field of view.

Suitable for Terrestrial Observation

The supplied specification explicitly lists nature observation as a suitable application.

The AZ-3 mount is intuitive to operate during daytime use, and the 102mm refractor can be used for distant landscapes and nature observation when configured with suitable accessories.

The mount also incorporates a photo-thread connection for compatible equipment.

2-Inch Rack-and-Pinion Focuser

The telescope is equipped with a 2-inch rack-and-pinion focuser. This larger connection provides flexibility when selecting compatible astronomical accessories.

A reducer allows the telescope to accept both 2-inch and 1.25-inch eyepieces, giving access to a wide range of observing options.

20mm and 10mm Eyepieces Included

Two 1.25-inch eyepieces are supplied:

• 20mm eyepiece – approximately 33x magnification
• 10mm eyepiece – approximately 66x magnification

A 1.25-inch 90-degree star diagonal provides a more comfortable viewing position when the telescope is pointed higher into the sky.

A red dot finder is also included to help locate and centre astronomical targets.

Portable Aluminium Tripod

The AZ-3 mount is supported by an extendable aluminium tripod. A practical accessory tray provides space for eyepieces and other small observing accessories during a session.

The combination of a relatively short optical tube and straightforward AZ-3 mounting makes this telescope much easier to transport than many long-focus 100mm-class refractors.

Designed Primarily for Visual Observing

The supplied specification rates the telescope for observing the Moon, planets, nebulae, galaxies and nature, but marks astrophotography as not recommended.

For that reason, this model is best regarded as a versatile visual telescope rather than a dedicated imaging platform.
