Omegon N 114/900 EQ-1 Newtonian Reflector Telescope
The Omegon N 114/900 EQ-1 is a classic Newtonian reflector designed to give beginners a capable introduction to visual astronomy. Its 114mm aperture gathers significantly more light than many small entry-level refractors, opening up detailed views of the Moon and planets together with brighter deep-sky objects.
With a 900mm focal length, f/7.9 focal ratio and equatorial EQ-1 mount, this is a traditional astronomical telescope that also introduces the observer to balancing, polar alignment and manual tracking.
114mm Newtonian Reflector Optics
The telescope uses a 114mm Newtonian reflector with a 900mm focal length. This aperture provides considerably greater light-gathering ability than a typical 70mm beginner telescope, making faint astronomical targets easier to see.
The formal specifications give a light-gathering capacity of 270, a limiting magnitude of 12.1 and resolving capacity of 1.01 arcseconds.
The optical system can also be collimated, allowing the alignment of the primary and secondary mirrors to be adjusted when required.
Explore the Moon and Planets
The 114mm aperture makes the telescope particularly rewarding on Solar System targets.
On the Moon, craters, mountain ranges and changing shadows along the terminator reveal increasing detail as magnification is raised. Jupiter can show its bright Galilean moons and major atmospheric belts, while Saturn's ring system is readily visible under suitable observing conditions.
Mars can also become an interesting target when it is close to opposition and atmospheric conditions are favourable.
Step into Deep-Sky Observing
The larger aperture also gives beginners access to brighter deep-sky targets. Under suitably dark skies, star clusters, brighter nebulae and galaxies become rewarding objects to explore.
The supplied specification explicitly lists nebulae and galaxies as a suitable application for this telescope.
Maximum Useful Magnification of 230x
The formal specification gives a maximum useful magnification of 230x. This is a much more meaningful figure than the extreme magnification claims sometimes associated with beginner telescopes.
In practical observing, the best magnification will depend on the target, atmospheric seeing and optical alignment.
1.25-Inch Rack-and-Pinion Focuser
The telescope uses a conventional 1.25-inch rack-and-pinion focuser, compatible with standard 1.25-inch astronomical eyepieces and accessories.
Focusing is adjusted using the focus control until the target appears sharp in the eyepiece.
6x30 Finder Scope
A 6x30 optical finder scope is supplied to help locate astronomical objects before viewing them through the main telescope.
The finder includes crosshairs to assist with accurately centring a target.
EQ-1 Equatorial Mount
The telescope is supplied on an EQ-1 equatorial mount. Once polar aligned, the mount allows astronomical objects to be followed more naturally as they move across the sky.
Fine-motion controls on the right ascension and declination axes allow precise positioning and manual tracking, while the supplied counterweight balances the optical tube.
The EQ-1 is intentionally simple, making it a useful introduction to the operation of an equatorial mount.
Aluminium Tripod
This version of the telescope is supplied with the free-standing aluminium tripod. The supplier description states that the tripod can be extended to approximately 70–120cm and includes an accessory tray for eyepieces and other small observing accessories.
Eyepieces and 2x Barlow Included
The telescope includes two 1.25-inch eyepieces:
- 25mm eyepiece – approximately 36x magnification
- 10mm eyepiece – approximately 90x magnification
A 2x Barlow lens is also supplied. Used with a compatible eyepiece, the Barlow doubles the magnification produced by that eyepiece.
Designed Primarily for Visual Astronomy
This telescope is intended first and foremost for visual observing. The supplied specification explicitly states that astrophotography is not recommended with this configuration.
The EQ-1 mount is well suited to learning visual astronomy and manual celestial tracking, but it should not be treated as a dedicated astrophotography platform.
