Omegon AC 60/700 AZ-1 Refractor Telescope

The Omegon AC 60/700 AZ-1 is an easy-to-use beginner's refractor designed to make a first introduction to astronomy simple and enjoyable. With a 60mm achromatic objective, 700mm focal length and intuitive AZ-1 alt-azimuth mount, it provides everything needed to start exploring the Moon, brighter planets and terrestrial subjects.

Assembly is straightforward and requires no complicated polar alignment or computer setup. Set up the tripod, attach the telescope, choose an eyepiece and you are ready to begin observing.

60mm Achromatic Refractor Optics

The telescope uses a 60mm achromatic refractor objective with a relatively long 700mm focal length. At f/11.7, this classic optical configuration is particularly well suited to observing bright Solar System objects.

The supplied specifications give a resolving capacity of 1.92 arcseconds, limiting magnitude of 10.7, light-gathering capacity of 70 and a maximum useful magnification of 120x.

Discover the Moon and Brighter Planets

The Moon is an excellent first target for the Omegon 60/700. Even through a modest-aperture telescope, the lunar surface can reveal an impressive landscape of craters, mountain ranges, plains and shadows.

Observing close to the lunar terminator – the boundary between the illuminated and dark portions of the Moon – can be particularly rewarding as low-angle sunlight highlights surface relief.

The 700mm focal length also makes this telescope suitable for introductory planetary observing. Jupiter and its four bright Galilean moons are accessible targets, while Saturn and its famous ring system can provide a memorable first view through a telescope.

Simple AZ-1 Alt-Azimuth Mount

The supplied AZ-1 alt-azimuth mount is designed to be straightforward for a first-time telescope user.

Instead of requiring polar alignment, the telescope simply moves horizontally in azimuth and vertically in altitude. This intuitive movement makes it easy to point the telescope towards the Moon, planets or terrestrial subjects.

The position can be locked on both axes once a target has been located, while a fine adjustment control for elevation allows more precise vertical positioning.

Height-Adjustable Aluminium Tripod

The AZ-1 mount is supplied on a height-adjustable aluminium tripod. According to the supplied product information, the tripod can be adjusted from approximately 71cm to 121cm.

An accessory tray provides a convenient place to keep eyepieces and other small accessories during an observing session.

Useful Accessories Included

The telescope includes three standard 1.25-inch eyepieces:

  • H 20mm eyepiece – approximately 35x magnification
  • H 12.5mm eyepiece – approximately 56x magnification
  • SR 4mm eyepiece – approximately 175x theoretical magnification

Important: although the supplied 4mm eyepiece mathematically produces approximately 175x, the manufacturer's specification gives the telescope's maximum useful magnification as 120x. Higher numerical magnification does not necessarily provide additional visible detail.

A 2x Barlow lens is also supplied, together with a 1.25-inch 90° star diagonal for more comfortable astronomical viewing.

The supplied red dot finder helps with locating celestial objects before switching to the main eyepiece.

Terrestrial Observation

The Omegon 60/700 is not limited to astronomy. The formal specification also rates it as suitable for nature observation.

A 1.5x erecting lens is included to provide an upright image for terrestrial viewing, making the telescope useful for exploring distant landscapes and other daytime subjects.

1.25-Inch Rack-and-Pinion Focuser

The telescope uses a 1.25-inch rack-and-pinion focuser. This standard connection allows compatible 1.25-inch astronomical eyepieces and accessories to be used, providing an upgrade path if the observer wants to add different eyepieces later.

Designed for Visual Observing

This telescope is primarily intended for visual astronomy and terrestrial observation. The formal product specifications rate astrophotography as not recommended.

Likewise, although exceptionally bright deep-sky objects may be detectable under favourable conditions, the formal specification does not recommend the 60/700 for nebula and galaxy observation. Its principal astronomical strengths are the Moon and brighter planets.
