Omegon AC 70/400 Solar BackPack AZ Telescope
Compact, lightweight and designed to travel, the Omegon AC 70/400 Solar BackPack AZ is a complete 70mm refractor telescope package for beginners, holidays and solar eclipse trips. The telescope combines a 70mm achromatic refractor with a portable aluminium alt-azimuth tripod, eyepieces, finder, Amici prism, solar filter and a matching backpack.
With a short 400mm focal length and f/5.7 focal ratio, it is particularly convenient for wide-field viewing, the Moon, brighter planets, daytime nature observation and safe solar viewing when the supplied solar filter is correctly fitted.
A Portable Telescope Made for Travel
Astronomy becomes much easier to enjoy away from home when the telescope is small enough to travel with you. The Omegon 70/400 uses a compact optical tube and lightweight tripod, with the main components and accessories packing into the supplied backpack.
At a specified total weight of just 1.7kg, this is a highly portable setup for holidays, countryside trips, eclipse travel or simply carrying into the garden for a quick observing session.
70mm Achromatic Refractor Optics
The telescope uses a 70mm two-element achromatic objective with a 400mm focal length. The resulting f/5.7 optical system provides a relatively wide field of view while keeping the telescope compact.
The manufacturer specifies a resolving capacity of 1.64 arcseconds, limiting magnitude of 11 and maximum useful magnification of 140x.
Observe the Moon and Brighter Planets
The Moon makes an excellent first astronomical target. Its large apparent size means craters, mountain ranges and other surface features can be explored without requiring a large telescope.
Brighter planets are also accessible. Jupiter and its four bright Galilean moons make an especially interesting target, while Saturn and its unmistakable ring system can be observed when conditions are suitable.
This model is primarily intended for beginner visual astronomy. The supplied specification identifies Moon and planetary observing as a suitable application, while astrophotography and observing faint nebulae and galaxies are not recommended.
Solar Observation and Eclipse Viewing
One of the defining features of this package is the supplied solar filter. It is designed to fit over the front of the telescope so that the Sun can be observed through the instrument when the filter is correctly fitted and undamaged.
This makes the telescope particularly appealing for solar eclipse viewing, allowing the partial phases of an eclipse to be followed through a telescope while using the appropriate solar protection.
Important Solar Safety Information
Never look directly at the Sun through this telescope unless the correct front-mounted solar filter is securely fitted.
Always inspect the solar filter for damage before use and make certain that it cannot become detached during observation. Never use a damaged filter. Children must only observe the Sun under responsible adult supervision.
Please read and follow the supplied Omegon instruction manual before carrying out solar observation.
Simple Alt-Azimuth Tripod
The supplied aluminium tripod provides a straightforward alt-azimuth mounting system. The telescope can simply be moved horizontally and vertically to point towards the chosen target.
The optical tube features a Vixen-style mounting rail together with a ¼-inch photo thread. The supplied tripod uses a ¼-inch photo screw to secure the telescope.
Daytime Nature Observation
The Omegon 70/400 is not restricted to astronomy. A supplied Amici prism makes the telescope useful for terrestrial viewing, giving it additional versatility for holidays, landscapes and nature observation.
1.25-Inch Eyepieces and Finder
The telescope uses a 1.25-inch rack-and-pinion focuser and comes with two eyepieces:
- K20mm 1.25" eyepiece – approximately 20x magnification
- K10mm 1.25" eyepiece – approximately 40x magnification
A 5x24 finder scope is also supplied to assist with locating and centring targets.
