Omegon AC 70/700 AZ-2 Refractor Telescope

The Omegon AC 70/700 AZ-2 is a straightforward 70mm refractor telescope designed to give beginners an accessible introduction to astronomy. Its combination of 70mm aperture, 700mm focal length and easy-to-use AZ-2 alt-azimuth mount makes it particularly suitable for first observations of the Moon and brighter planets.

The telescope is quick to assemble without tools and includes the essential accessories required to begin observing, including two 1.25-inch eyepieces, a red dot finder, 2x Barlow lens and 90° star diagonal.

A Simple First Telescope for Astronomy

A first telescope should make getting outside and observing straightforward. The Omegon 70/700 AZ-2 uses a traditional refractor optical design together with a simple alt-azimuth mount, so there is no polar alignment procedure to learn before you can begin.

Set up the tripod, attach the telescope, fit an eyepiece and point towards your chosen target. This simplicity makes the telescope particularly approachable for beginners learning their way around the night sky.

70mm f/10 Achromatic Refractor

The telescope uses a 70mm achromatic refractor with a 700mm focal length, giving an optical focal ratio of f/10. The manufacturer specifies a light-gathering capacity of 100 and a resolving capacity of 1.64 arcseconds.

Compared with a 60mm telescope, the 70mm aperture collects approximately 36% more light, providing additional resolution and brightness for astronomical observing.

The specified maximum useful magnification is 140x. As with any telescope, the best usable magnification on a particular night will depend upon the target and atmospheric conditions.

Explore the Moon

The Moon is an ideal target for a 70mm refractor. Its bright surface contains a huge variety of craters, mountain ranges, plains and other structures, with the appearance changing continuously as the lunar phase progresses.

Particularly interesting views can be found around the terminator – the boundary between the illuminated and shadowed portions of the lunar surface – where low-angle sunlight helps reveal the relief of craters and mountains.

Observe Jupiter, Saturn and Mars

Brighter planets are another natural target for the Omegon 70/700. Jupiter and its bright Galilean moons can be followed as their positions change from night to night, while Saturn's famous ring system is within reach of this aperture.

Mars can also be observed when favourably positioned, although the amount of visible planetary detail will always depend on atmospheric seeing, magnification and the planet's distance from Earth.

Easy-to-Use AZ-2 Alt-Azimuth Mount

The supplied AZ-2 mount is an alt-azimuth design that moves vertically and horizontally. This intuitive movement makes it particularly suitable for someone using an astronomical telescope for the first time.

Fine adjustment controls can be locked on both axes, helping to keep a located object in the field of view. The mount sits on an adjustable aluminium tripod with a specified height range of 67–119cm.

An accessory tray is also supplied with the mount.

1.25-Inch Rack-and-Pinion Focuser

Focusing is handled by a conventional rack-and-pinion focuser. Turning the focus control moves the focuser smoothly until the target reaches the sharpest possible focus.

The focuser accepts standard 1.25-inch accessories, providing compatibility with the common 1.25-inch astronomical eyepiece format.

Two Eyepieces, Barlow Lens and Red Dot Finder Included

The telescope is supplied with Super 20mm and Super 10mm 1.25-inch eyepieces.

  • 20mm eyepiece – approximately 35x magnification
  • 10mm eyepiece – approximately 70x magnification
  • 2x Barlow lens – increases the magnification produced by an eyepiece by 2x
  • Red dot finder – assists with locating astronomical targets
