Omegon Pro APO AP 80/500 ED Carbon with Field Flattener
The Omegon Pro APO AP 80/500 ED Carbon with Field Flattener combines a compact 80mm ED apochromatic refractor with a dedicated imaging accessory package for astrophotography. Its FPL-53 doublet optics, lightweight carbon-fibre tube, precision rotating focuser and included Omegon field flattener make this version particularly attractive for photographers looking to build a compact deep-sky imaging rig.
With an 80mm aperture, 500mm focal length and f/6.3 focal ratio, the telescope offers a useful balance of field of view, portability and optical performance for imaging nebulae, star fields and other deep-sky targets.
FPL-53 Doublet Apochromatic Optics
The objective is a two-element ED apochromatic doublet using a combination of OHARA FPL-53 and S-NBM51 glass. This optical design is intended to provide excellent colour correction, sharp stellar images and high contrast.
All optical surfaces are multi-coated, while an internal baffle system and dark tube lining help control stray light and unwanted reflections.
Field Flattener Included for Astrophotography
This version of the Pro APO 80/500 includes an Omegon field flattener. A refractor naturally produces some field curvature, which becomes increasingly noticeable when imaging with larger camera sensors. Stars towards the edge of an uncorrected image can therefore lose the tight appearance seen near the centre.
The supplied field flattener is designed to correct this curvature and provide a flatter photographic field, making better use of the camera sensor across the image.
Importantly, this is a 1.0x field flattener: the telescope's 500mm focal length remains unchanged rather than being reduced.
M48 Connections
The flattener uses M48 threads on both sides. This larger threaded connection is particularly appropriate for 2-inch imaging systems, helping avoid the unnecessary restriction associated with a smaller M42/T2 connection.
Correct Camera Spacing
Correct spacing between the flattener and camera sensor is important for achieving the intended field correction.
For a telescope with a 500mm focal length, the supplied information specifies approximately 118mm backfocus. Suitable extension rings and imaging accessories can therefore be used to establish the required spacing for your particular camera setup.
80mm Aperture and 500mm Focal Length
The 80mm aperture keeps the telescope compact while providing useful light-gathering ability for both imaging and visual astronomy.
Its 500mm focal length and f/6.3 focal ratio provide a relatively wide field that is well suited to many extended deep-sky objects.
The supplied specifications give a resolving capacity of 1.44 arcseconds, limiting magnitude of 11.3, light-gathering capacity of 130 and maximum useful magnification of 160x.
Carbon-Fibre Optical Tube
The optical tube is manufactured from carbon fibre, providing a lightweight but rigid structure. Carbon fibre also exhibits relatively low thermal expansion, helping reduce focus changes as temperatures fall during a long imaging session.
The carbon-fibre dew shield can be retracted for transport and is internally lined to help suppress stray reflections.
Precision 2-Inch Rotating Crayford Focuser
A 2-inch Crayford focuser provides the precise focusing required for astrophotography. The focuser incorporates fine adjustment and can be rotated through 360°, allowing the camera orientation to be changed for more effective target framing.
The formal product specification lists a 1:10 fine-focus reduction.
Visual Astronomy as well as Imaging
Although this package has a strong astrophotography focus, the telescope itself can also be used for visual astronomy. The 80mm apochromatic objective is suitable for observing the Moon and planets as well as brighter nebulae, galaxies, clusters and other deep-sky objects.
The supplied specifications also list nature observation as a suitable application.
Aluminium Transport Case Included
An aluminium transport case is supplied to protect the telescope during storage and transport. The original product information specifies case dimensions of approximately 56 × 20 × 32cm.
