Choosing the Right Telescope Mount
The mount is just as important as the telescope itself. A good mount should comfortably support the optical tube while keeping unwanted movement and vibration to a minimum. A stable mount makes focusing easier and provides a much more enjoyable observing experience.
Telescope mounts generally operate around two axes. Alt-azimuth mounts move the telescope up and down (altitude) and from side to side (azimuth), making them simple and intuitive for visual observing. Equatorial mounts are designed so that one axis can be aligned with the Earth's rotational axis, allowing celestial objects to be tracked as they move across the night sky. This type of tracking is particularly important for long-exposure astrophotography.
For lightweight photographic equipment, a conventional camera tripod can provide a compact and portable solution, particularly when travelling.
A GoTo mount adds computerised control. Once correctly set up and aligned, the system can automatically locate astronomical objects and track them across the sky, making it much easier to find and observe targets.
