Omegon RA Motor Set for EQ-3 and EQ-4 Mounts
Add automatic right ascension tracking to a compatible Omegon equatorial mount with the Omegon RA Motor Set for EQ-3 and EQ-4.
Once your equatorial mount has been correctly polar aligned, the motor drives the right ascension (RA) axis at sidereal speed, compensating for the apparent movement of the night sky caused by the Earth's rotation.
Instead of continually making manual corrections to keep an object in the eyepiece, the motor provides automatic RA tracking for more relaxed visual observing and an introduction to basic astronomical imaging.
Automatic Sidereal Tracking
A celestial object does not remain stationary in the eyepiece. As the Earth rotates, stars, planets and other astronomical targets appear to move across the sky and will gradually drift out of the telescope's field of view.
The Omegon motor drive addresses this by automatically moving the RA axis at sidereal tracking speed. Once an object has been centred, the motor helps keep it in the field of view without the need for continuous manual adjustment.
This can be particularly useful when observing at higher magnifications or when sharing the telescope with family and friends.
Hand Controller with 2x and 4x Correction Speeds
The supplied hand controller allows you to make positioning corrections without disengaging the motor drive.
Two correction speeds are available:
- 2x speed for finer positioning adjustments
- 4x speed for faster corrections
Once the adjustment control is released, the drive returns to its normal tracking speed.
A Useful Introduction to Astrophotography
Manual slow-motion controls are useful for visual astronomy, but manually maintaining consistent tracking is much more difficult when using a camera.
By motorising the RA axis, this drive provides a useful first step towards basic astrophotography with a compatible Omegon EQ-3 or EQ-4 setup.
The supplied information specifically identifies the Moon and planets including Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn as suitable photographic subjects, particularly when using a digital camera with suitable manual controls or an astronomical planetary camera.
Please note: this is a single-axis RA motor drive. It does not provide motorised declination tracking, GoTo functionality, autoguiding or PEC correction. It should not be confused with a more advanced computer-controlled astrophotography mount.
Northern and Southern Hemisphere Operation
The motor system can be switched for operation in either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, allowing the tracking direction to be configured appropriately for the observing location.
Battery Powered for Field Use
The drive is battery powered and the supplied specification lists a 9V power supply requirement. This makes the motor suitable for portable observing where mains power may not be available.
Important Compatibility Information
Please check your telescope before ordering.
The supplied manufacturer information states that this motor drive is suitable for:
- Omegon N 150/750 EQ-4
- Omegon N 126/920 EQ-3
Compatibility is specified for telescopes manufactured from 2015 onwards.
Do not assume compatibility with other EQ-3 or EQ-4 mounts simply because they have a similar mount designation.
