Seestar S50: the essential specifications
The original S50 combines a 50 mm aperture, 250 mm focal length and f/5 apochromatic triplet with a Sony IMX462 sensor. Native image resolution is 1920 × 1080. ZWO lists a net weight of 2.5 kg, 64 GB storage and a 6000 mAh battery.
It does not contain a separate ASI224MC camera. Its mount is alt-azimuth, with equatorial-mode support now listed by ZWO. Use the current manufacturer's setup instructions and appropriate support hardware for that mode.
ZWO quotes approximately six hours of battery life under laboratory conditions. Temperature, operation and dew-heater use affect actual runtime. Do not plan an entire night's session around the headline figure.

Who should consider it?
Our buying assessment: shortlist the S50 if you want an integrated way into deep-sky imaging and prefer a screen-based experience to assembling a camera, telescope and mount separately. Before choosing, decide whether your priority is easy setup, a particular target, or the flexibility to upgrade individual components.
It is not a substitute for every kind of telescope. If your main ambition is detailed planetary imaging, discuss a dedicated planetary setup with us rather than choosing on broad claims about seeing Jupiter or Saturn. Being able to record a planet is different from resolving fine surface or cloud detail.
Questions to answer before buying
- Which targets matter most? Make a short list and check their framing rather than relying on a general “best telescope” label.
- Where will you use it? Consider trees, buildings, nearby lights, storage and a stable position for the tripod.
- How long are your sessions? Plan charging and power access alongside portability.
- Do you want an eyepiece? Make sure an app-based imaging experience matches your expectations.
- Which model is being offered? Check that specifications, accessories and pricing relate to the original S50 rather than a Pro model.
Getting useful buying advice
Tell us what you want to photograph, your budget and any equipment you already own. A good recommendation should explain both why a telescope fits and what it will not do. We have deliberately avoided an unexplained star rating, anonymous testimonials or a blanket “best for everyone” claim.
