The StellaLyra 16-inch brings a 406mm parabolic mirror to a dismantlable carbon-fibre truss structure. It is a substantial aperture upgrade for experienced visual observers who want to explore faint objects and spend longer studying the details.

Who should choose the 16-inch?
You already enjoy finding objects, understand mirror alignment and want a telescope around which to plan dedicated observing sessions. Access to a dark site makes the investment in aperture especially worthwhile.
This is a considered step into larger equipment. Confirm the handling arrangements, storage route and comfortable eyepiece access before ordering; a truss structure breaks down for transport, but the individual components still need careful handling.

Large aperture in a structure that comes apart.
Six carbon-fibre poles connect the lower mirror box to the upper secondary cage. The separate components make packing more flexible than a single full-length tube.
Build an assembly routine in daylight before your first observing trip. Allow a clean, level working area, keep the optics covered while practical and check alignment once assembled. Measure your vehicle and storage space rather than assuming every component will fit.

Give faint objects the time they deserve.
A larger mirror gives you more light to work with. Let that encourage slower observing: revisit a galaxy’s shape, compare different magnifications on a cluster and look for subtle changes in a nebula’s brightness.
Sky darkness and transparency still matter. Shield your eyes from nearby lighting, allow dark adaptation and expect delicate visual detail rather than the colours of a long-exposure photograph. Recording a few observations helps you notice how much the view changes between nights.

Find the field. Refine the view.
The 8×50 right-angle correct-image finder supplies an upright aiming view. The 2-inch Crayford focuser provides 10:1 fine adjustment and accepts 1.25-inch eyepieces through the included adapter.
Align the finder before the session, then centre your target at low power. At higher magnifications, focus deliberately and wait for the air to steady. Constant adjustment cannot remove atmospheric shimmer.

Movement you control by hand.
Adjustable altitude tension and balance let you tune the movement to your eyepiece setup. The base rotates horizontally while the telescope tilts vertically.
This is manual observing, with no GoTo or motorised tracking. Practise gentle nudges at low power; close-up views need more frequent corrections. A stable, comfortable stance is particularly valuable when following an object for a long look.

Prepare the mirror before judging the detail.
The rear cooling fan helps the primary mirror approach outdoor temperature. A battery holder is included; batteries are separate.
Set up ahead of your planned high-power work and check collimation after assembly. Collimation is the alignment of the mirrors, and a suitable tool is an essential part of your setup routine. Begin with wider views while the telescope settles, then increase power when conditions support it.

Magnifications are rounded from the 1829mm focal length. The gap between these views makes an intermediate eyepiece a useful later consideration. Choose it around your preferred targets rather than buying solely for the highest possible power.

Before moving to a 16-inch
Is it a suitable first telescope?
It is best suited to someone already comfortable with visual astronomy and mirror alignment. Handling and assembly are significant parts of ownership. If you are starting out, discuss your observing plans with us before choosing this size.
Will it replace a deep-sky imaging setup?
No. This manual Dobsonian is primarily a visual instrument and does not track the sky for long exposures. Choose a system designed around tracking and camera compatibility if photography is your main aim.
Can I use it from a light-polluted garden?
Bright targets remain worthwhile, but aperture does not remove skyglow. Faint-object observing benefits greatly from darker surroundings. Consider whether your normal observing site will make good use of this telescope.
